A Curious Velociraptor / BTW I Stole this Riff 2.0 by pilsator A Curious Velociraptor / BTW I Stole this Riff 2.0 by pilsator
Paravian time continues, this time with all-time favorite Velociraptor, and an improvement if not remake of my old depiction of this smallish-to-mid-sized dromaeosaurid ("improvement" mostly in how the scanner handled this one in comparison to the older drawing).

It has 14 secondaries as it's supposed to, it has a bald patch of skin between its wings - partially exposed here - and it has the same curious expression as every fleshed-out Velociraptor's head. This dromaeosaur has a face that makes it seem to always look at something interesting. I tried to go a bit for a somewhat sparsely plumed "desert bird" look as it would fit an animal at home in a xeric environment, but this time in a different direction than in my previous attempt.

Beautiful. I think your technique for rendering soft textures has improved over the previous version, too.

Thank you very much, Emily. I found the technique I use to be a reasonable trade-off - it's fairly easy to do for me and seems to look good enough.

Oh, nice =D

Yes, I was kinda torn between fully feathering the pubic boot, or going for the "feathers are abraded here due to it sitting on that thing a lot". I don't even know how likely the latter is, it's more like I've been doing it for a long time, and gave it not much of a thought. Well, it's certainly not too late to fix it.

I'm not saying it's odd or anything. Some breeds of goat (my pet included) have bald patches and callouses on their chests where there's abrasion on the sternum as they kneel and lay. It's just wierd and sad enough that I can totally picture a scroungy little Velociraptor having the same rough and padded skin. Very cool!

Love those sickle-claws! We need more Velociraptors like this one.

Thanks, Vlad! Indeed, Velociraptor's sickle claws seem to look much more like actual sickles than those of other dromaeosaurids, being large yet not overly hooked and relatively slender.
